What is Soroptimist International of Mesa, Inc?

Soroptimist International of Mesa, Inc. is a service organization of executive and business leaders dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone and enhancing the status of women of all ages. We have played an active role in our community since we were chartered in 1950. Current membership stands at 32, including one of our original Charter Members.

When Does the Club Meet?

The Mesa Club meets weekly, on Wednesdays, from 12:30 to 1:30 at the East Valley Institute of Technology, 1601 W. Main Street, Mesa, Arizona 85201. We meet in Building Two, the Culinary Arts Building, and we are guaranteed an excellent meal prepared and served by the students. The third Wednesday of the month is reserved for our business meeting. The other meetings feature programs presented by community, business and political leaders on a wide variety of topics. We strive to ensure that our members are well-educated on issues of local, regional, national or international importance.

What Does Soroptimist International of Mesa do?

Our current projects include:

Teen Self-Esteem Program:   Yes, I Can!  This teen mentoring program works with at-risk 8th and 9th grade girls from Carson Junior High, located in one of Mesa’s older and more challenged areas.  Our goal is to build self-esteem by engaging them in club activities, pairing them with club members, having special programs with speakers on topics of particular interest to this age group, and encouraging them to plan and work to make their dreams for themselves come true.

Women's Opportunity Award: S.I. Mesa participates yearly and annually awards $1,500 to a woman who is head of the household, to assist in furthering her education. Through the Soroptimist Foundation of Mesa, we award an additional $2,000-3,000 in scholarship aid to Women Opportunity Winner  runner-ups.

Violet Richardson Award: A cash award to a 14-17 year old girl who volunteers in her community.  There is also a matching donation in her name to the organization for which she volunteers.

Making a Difference for Women Award: We recognize women who are leaders in our community at an annual Awards Luncheon.

Culinary Arts Student Scholarship: To thank and recognize the East Valley Institute of Technology Culinary Arts Program where we meet for lunch, we present an award of $500 to an outstanding student, to assist in furthering their studies.

Saturday of Service*:  Soroptimists from S.I. Mesa participate in a community service project on the first Saturday of March, as do many other Soroptimists across the nation.  We chose a new project every year.  Past projects include housing painting, yard clean up, book collection and donation to our library, and reorganizing the resource room for Domestic Violence Stop, a local non-profit organization. (Soroptimist Saturday of Service is adopted world-wide by Soroptimist Clubs).

Fundraising Activities:  We engage in a variety of fund-raising activities throughout the year, including a club garage sale, a bunko event, and sales of Honey-Baked Ham products at holiday seasons.  Funds support our Women’s Opportunity Awards, the “Yes, I Can” project, and other women-focused organizations such as Autumn House, Mesa Domestic Violence Shelter.  SI Mesa received as grant from Soroptimist International of the Americas (Soroptimist Club Grant) for a new computer for the residents, as well ass new laundry equipment, sheets, towels and laundry detergent for a year.  We are also in charge of the basic needs room at the Shelter.
