     May 2018        NEWS BLAST

Fellow Dream Maker Soroptimists!

Need vs Want
.  We all know the very basic Maslow's hierarchy of needs.  As Soroptimists, we often help women and girls with even the most basic needs of shelter and clean water. We help with issues of safety.  We help encourage and include others.  We’ve designed our Dream Programs to help with esteem and achieving their dreams.  We should all be very proud of our Soroptimist organization’s focus.  Simply, we meet needs.  And, we encourage women and girls to dream beyond their basic needs.

As you are winding up your Soroptimist year and starting to dream of your club’s future, keep in mind the difference between the needs of your community and your members, and the individual wants that often bog us down. Let’s focus less on the small percentage of what you don’t “want” about your club and your projects, and more on the large percentage of what you actually achieve when you focus on the “needs” of others.  As a Soroptimist, you meet the very basics needs of others, and often you meet a lot of wants.  Let’s celebrate that!

The GWR Board is very excited about our upcoming Spring Conference and our theme “Soroptimist Soaring: Discovering, Exploring, Dreaming.”  We’ll discover actual needs, explore ways to help meet them, and dream of how to go beyond meeting needs to achieving wants.  Our Soroptimist Summit will include experts who will discuss the actual needs of our community members.  Our keynote speakers and workshops will help you become a stronger critical thinker, develop needed leadership confidence and skills, and train you to become the mentor you want to be to help those you serve.  And, of course, there
is fun, fellowship, and celebration!   We “want” and “need” to share our Soroptimist experience with you!  Please register now!

Best wishes,
Governor Penny

  • Review the Bylaws proposals and 2018-2019 Budget

CLUB GIVING
Consider writing a check to SIA and include that donation in your awards ceremony!  While your dues cover the administrative costs and operating expenses associated with belonging to an international organization, they do not provide any direct support to women and girls. Encourage your club to send 10% of your club’s annual income to Soroptimist through the Club Giving program by
May 31st.  If you have any questions about the 10% Club Giving contribution, please contact Vanessa at vanessa@michaelalanaz.com.

FOUNDERS PENNIES
Founders Pennies is a time honored tradition since 1943 - just six pennies for every year of our existence per member.  The pennies are used to fund the Live Your Dream Awards; Dream It, Be It; and other SIA programs that improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Founders Pennies represent approximately 10% of the total $1.7 million contributed to fund federation programs.  An easy way to participate is to include it in the members’ annual dues like most clubs.  Send your pennies by
May 31st!

Every dollar (DREAM) counts!  Fill up your Dream Jar and turn in your donation using the below form to your club treasurer by May 15th.   If you turn in $100 or more, you’ll receive a DREAM MAKER PIN – distributed at the 2018 Spring Conference.  Drop off one jar representing your club at Spring Conference for display. All donations help fund our region/club Dream Programs.  Contact  vanessa@michaelalanaz.com if you have any questions.
